1 week tour with Daniel through Rwanda and Uganda

We booked a one week trip with through Rwanda and Uganda for chimpanzees and gorilla tracking

Our guide was Daniel. He knew a lot about all the animals, the countries and their culture. Plus he has a lot of very good stories. We had a lot of fun with him. He was the Best guide we ever had.

Chimpanzee and gorilla tracking was a once in a live time experience. We can totally recommend it.

The tour itself was of high quality for a reasonable price. Chris (the Boss of engabi) selected a good route so we never had a long drive. Lake Buryoni was a hidden gem. But also the cultural project was good to see. All accommodation were nice with good food. Especially the one at the lake.

The booking was very uncomplicated, Chris was very flexible for changes.

The only little negativ thing were a little confusions with times and dates. So I would recommend to write down all dates and times in the initial travel plan so that both sides can double check, if everything is correct.

Great 1 day gorilla trekking tour

We had a great experience with Engabi tours and travel.
Christopher was great at communicating and answering any questions we had prior to booking the trip. We met with him the night before our tour and he talked us through the plan and introduced us to our driver. He is a really nice guy and we would definitely recommend the company.

Murchison Falls National Park is located in the Northern Part of Uganda on the Northernmost reaches of the Albertine Rift Valley with its terrain bisected by the Victoria Nile. A Murchison Falls National Park Safari brings you lots of memorable activities with diverse animal species and various accommodation Options to host you.

The powerful Murchison falls can be viewed for photography by making your way to the top where you can actually see where the water makes its way through the gorge often called the “devil’s cauldron or by going on  a boat safari which will take you as close to the falls as possible from below. We recommend that you view the falls from both perspectives since each one offers an entirely unique experience. The most booked safari tour itinerary to Murchison falls National park is a 3 Days Murchison falls national park safari tour though you can also choose anywhere between 1 – 12 day safaris to see all that Uganda has to offer including gorilla trekking, Chimpanzee trekking among other experiences by the rest of Uganda’s leading national parks.

Murchison Falls National Park-Safari, Activities, Entrance Fee & Lodges
Launch Cruise to the bottom of Murchison Falls

How to Reach Murchison falls National Park

The easiest way to reach the Park is to fly into Entebbe International Airport which is near Uganda’s capital city of Kampala and depending on your arrival time, you can either spend a night in Kampala or head out for a 5-6 hours’ drive to Murchison Falls that same day. The other option is to spend a night in Luwero town which is closer to the park and gives a chance to easily track the Rihnos in Ziwa Rhino sanctuary without rushing the next morning.

Contact us to arrange the transport, accommodation, meals and activities before you start your safari. This is because you need a good air conditioned  4×4 vehicle since the roads are dusty during the dry season and muddy during the rainy season.

Murchison Falls National Park Safari Activities and Attractions/ Animals

The main attraction in the national park is most definitely the waterfalls but there is plenty for you to see including over 70 African mammal species and 4 out of the famous “Big Five” including lions, leopards, elephants, and buffaloes. Murchison falls National park is also a great place to partake in bird watching and here you will find nearly 450 bird species found throughout the park. In the nearby Budongo forest you can involve yourself in a Chimpanzee tracking experience.

Murchison Falls National Safari Cost

Murchison Falls National Park entrance fee is 40$ for the foreigners, 30$ for foreign residents of Uganda, and 20,000Ugx for the east African community citizens per person. The park entrance fee is valid for 24 hours starting from your time of entry into the park.

A 3 days Murchison Falls  National Park Uganda safari tour will cost averagely 1100$ (budget), 1220$ (Mid-range) and 1800$ (Luxury) for a single traveler.

Best Time to Visit or When go to Murchison Falls National Park

The best time to visit or go to Murchison Falls National Park for game or animal viewing is during the Months of December to February when the weather is mild and the crowds are fewer and the peak season of June to September when the weather is dry and the grass is short.  However it’s around this time when the park is crowded with tourists and vehicles.

For those interested in birding experience, the low seasons of March to May and October to November are the best time to visit Murchison falls National Park because during this time the birds in the park are very active. This rainy season is the time the breeding season takes place and the migratory birds are escaping harsh winters in Europe.

African Safari Cost

How much does an African safari cost ?

An African safari costs anywhere between $150 and $1,500 (USD) per person per night/day . A budget African Safari Cost averages $150 per night, mid-range $350 and luxury African Safari $750. The extreme high-end African safari cost can easily go up to $1,500 per night or more! There is literally a safari to suit every budget. In this article we break down the different African Safari Cost determinants and by the end of this article, we hope that you will be able to easily select a destination that fits your budget. Engabi Tours and Travel offers trips ranging in length from 1 day to 30 days in Uganda , Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya

Top African Safari Cost Determinants:

Now that you’ve evaluated the extra charges, you can begin to analyze all of the other factors that can affect overall safari costs. There are a number of factors that influence or determine the overall African Safari cost in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania or Kenya and these include but are not limited to the following:

The Number of days you wish to spend on an African safari Vacation

The length of your African safari Vacation has a direct impact on the final African Safari Cost of your trip as the more days you spend on your African safari the more costly your trip becomes. We recommend that you book all your safari days with one company as you will end up paying less on a daily basis.

Safari season of the experience you want to go for

An African Safari has two seasons namely the high season and the low season or the low, high and peak seasons in some countries. Each season comes with different costs of accommodation and activity fees based on the traffic of tourists. Therefore visiting in the low or off season guarantees low prices or costs and surprisingly a better game viewing experience as there less tourist crowds and lush countryside though the roads might be in bad state especially during the rainy season.

Preferred safari destination and experiences

The country you decide to go to and the experience to do there determines the outlook of the final African safari cost as some experiences are cheaper compared to other destinations. For example a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda is cheaper than a gorilla trekking tour in Rwanda. This is because a gorilla permit in Uganda costs $800 while the gorilla permit in Rwanda costs $1500.

Preferred accommodation style

Accommodation takes around 40% of the safari cost and a typical safari lodge costs from $100 to $3000 per night for two people in the peak or high season based on your choice of accommodation style.

How much does an African safari cost ?

How You get around and mode of transfers

The choice of the vehicle type to take you around affects the safari cost so much. Mid-range and luxury travelers prefer custom-made safari jeeps or land cruisers whereas the budget and some mid-range travelers prefer the  pop-top minibuses.

Exclusivity

Famous and big name parks such as Serengeti, Masai Mara, Queen Elizabeth and Murchison falls in East Africa attract  lower prices and on the other hand little known parks like Kidepo Valley where you are guaranteed peace and tranquility tend to attract a higher price

Compulsory and non-obvious additional costs

Visa Costs which vary country by country and range from $30-$100 per person

Costs of international flights and sometimes local flights.

Extra accommodation costs for example on arrival if you arrive in the afternoon or on the last day of your safari

Tips for Waiters, room staff, guides and drivers that vary according to your experience and satisfaction. Tips can range from $15 per day

Costs of Vaccinations and tests such as Yellow fever, Malaria and any other vaccine or test your doctor might recommend or is required on arrival

Cost of travel insurance which ranges from $50-$175 for two weeks

Whether You Book Your Tour Directly with a Local African Tour Operator or Not

Booking your tour directly with a local tour operator or travel company means that you cut the costs of middlemen travel agents in your country that tend to take huge commissions. The same applies to booking using online travel agents like TripAdvisor and Safari Bookings. They tend to take huge commissions from listing tours from local African companies and as a result the price of the tour tend to be higher if you book through these agents.

How long to spend or stay on safari in Africa

Average days to spend on safari in East Africa:

How long you can spend on your safari in Africa or stay on safari is very much a question of personal preference that depends on a number of factors like your budget, what you prefer seeing, modern work pressures and how much holiday time you have at your disposal. Averagely you can spend 2-16 days on safari in Africa depending on your experience desires and budget.

There are a number of scenarios we encounter in relation to safari duration. There are some few clients especially repeat travelers who prefer going on safari for 3-4 weeks and surprisingly will not feel how long enough the safari has been. They try to go by the original concept of looking at a safari as a “journey” of discovery and reflection to the wild and ancient hinterland of the “Dark Continent”.

Then we have the other group of clients traveling to Africa and East Africa in particular for business, conference, visiting friends or just transiting through among other reasons and want to enjoy a quick safari as an add on with in the shortest time possible. Most of these travelers prefer 1 day to 4 days safari.

Given enough time at your disposal, the average duration of our safaris is between 8 to 16 nights and within these days you can cover all the major Uganda safari experience or Rwanda safari experience or even combine Uganda or Rwanda primates with Tanzania migration safari with an extension to Zanzibar.

But with pressures that come with work, family and costs, two weeks safari duration seems to be what most travelers prefer factoring in travel time. At Engabi Tours and Travel we normally recommend that you have at least one rest night on arrival after a long international flight and to combine your safari with a non-wildlife experience like Ssese Islands beaches on Lake Victoria, Lake Kivu in Rwanda or Zanzibar Islands to allow you relax after you hectic safari activities.

The remoteness of the safari activity experience determines how long you stay for a safari since there is a need to balance between diversity and immersion. This also goes hand in hand with how much time is required to transfer from one lodge to another and from activity back to the lodge.

If a lot of time is spend moving to the activities and back then you need a longer stay to be able to able to have enough time relaxing and enjoying your room. However some experience can be experienced within two days or even one days. For example a 1 day Uganda gorilla trekking safari tour from Kigali.

Still wondering how long you should stay on safari! Contact our travel expert with your preferred travel style and we advise you.

Best Safari Destinations in East Africa

Where to have the Best Safari in East Africa 2023;

Among the best Safari Destinations in East Africa, the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania and Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya stand out as the top places for a classic Big Five mammals safari, Bwindi forest National park in Uganda and Volcanoes National park in Rwanda Stand out for Gorilla Trekking and other Primates tours. Other National parks and best places to go on Safari in East Africa include Amboseli National Park in Kenya, Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda, Tarangire National Park in Tanzania, Murchison falls National Park in Uganda and Lake Nakuru Nakuru National park in Kenya among others.

Best Safari Destinations in East Africa

Below we bring you the best Safari Destinations in East Africa

Where to have the best Safari in East Africa

  • Serengeti National park
  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
  • Volcanoes National Park
  • Queen Elizabeth national park
  • Murchison falls National park
  • Ngorongoro Crater
  • Amboseli National Park
  • Masai Mara Game Reserve

Kenya

Often regarded to be the ultimate safari destination in East Africa, Kenya undoubtedly incorporates some of the continent’s most rewarding and exciting national parks and wildlife reserves. Famous among all is the incomparable Masai Mara whose green grasslands support large concentrations of lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and other predators. From the months of August to October Masai Mara hosts the world’s greatest wildlife spectacle- the great Wildebeest migration when thousands of wildebeest stream across the Mara River from neighboring Tanzania.

Next in line is the iconic Amboseli, where some of the continent’s most impressive and well habituated elephant herds can be seen crossing the rugged plains below the snow-capped Kilimanjaro Mountain. We cannot forget the gem infested Rift Valley lakes of Lake Nakura which is home to rhinos, Lake Bogoria home to the flamingos and the amazing Lake Naivasha home to different species of birds and Hippos. While in Kenya you can also look out for Laikipia, Samburu Buffalo springs and Meru wildlife reserves.

A large section of a Kenya safari is ideal for couples or romantic getaway most especially the coast. Additionally, families and couples looking for quality time together should consider booking a private safari with their Engabi Tours and Travel.

Like any other sub-Saharan Africa destination, the best time to visit or go on a Kenya safari is during the dry season that happens from late June to October because these are the best wildlife viewing months and it’s the best to experience the wildebeest as the  migration usually reaches the Masai Mara in August and remains until October when they move back to the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Tanzania

Home to the Serengeti a place that many safari lovers regard to be the greatest national park on the continent, Tanzania offers memorable, romantic and unique experiences that you can enjoy as a couple, family, group or even as a solo traveler. From climbing Africa’s highest mountain the Kilimanjaro Mountain, riding over the migration in Serengeti in a balloon safari to viewing and appreciating wildlife scenic landscapes or even relaxing at island beaches you get to create shared memories that you can reminisce about for decades to come.

The northern Tanzania safari circuit is a terrific introduction to the continent as it takes to the safari capital of Africa bringing you closer to the iconic parks of Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater Lake Manyara and Tarangire as well as Mt Kilimanjaro.

Other world class wildlife attractions in Tanzania include the chimpanzees of Gombe  and Mahale out west, or the southern wilderness parks of Selous and Ruaha which are better for return safari trips due to vast distances  and the poor  infrastructure.

The best time to visit Tanzania depends on your experience of interest for example between January and March is Wildebeest calving season and Serengeti national park attracts more predators such as lions, leopards among others in search of food hence this season becoming one of the best times to spot predators in the Serengeti national park.

Between June and July is the best time to witness the great wildebeest migration in large numbers in the Serengeti. However wildebeest migration can also be witnessed but not in large numbers in August till early November.

In January large numbers of migratory birds are arriving especially in Ngorongoro and Lake manyara and is the best time for birders to visit Tanzania as it increases chances of seeing variety of bird species. Tanzania Birding is also possible in November and May.

For Mountain climbers and hikes, the dry season of between and October is very favorable to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt.Meru.

However tourists should not forget that the dry season is the best time to visit Tanzania or go on a Tanzania safari because this season enables animal viewing as the grass dries up and the water holes too therefore, the animals have to move around the park in search for water and pasture and in most cases the animals tend to gather in an area having water in the national park therefore they gather around water holes rendering it the best spot for animal viewing. It also provides the best opportunity to catch the predators as they wait on the small animals coming to drink water along the banks of the river.

Uganda

Uganda is the arguably the best destination for those in search of the absolute pinnacle of primate safaris. Bwindi forest impenetrable National park and Mgahinga National park are home to the Mountain gorillas while Kibale forest National Park is home to Chimpanzees as well as colobus monkeys, velvet monkeys, de Brazza monkeys and a host of other species.

Destination Uganda is just as much sought after by birders as it boasts of over a thousand species such as the handsome francolin, dwarf honey guide, purple-breasted sunbird and the unforgettable shoebill among others. Additionally Uganda is a superb destination for traditional safari by vehicle in Murchison falls and Queen Elizabeth National parks or by boat, thanks to its lush habitats and variety of species. For those in search of something fresh and vibrant, Uganda is the perfect choice. A sighting of lion, elephant or leopard here is a moment to treasure and is seldom shared with other vehicles. Six to 8 days are enough for a first time traveler to explore Uganda

The best time to visit Uganda is like the other East Africa destinations the winter months (southern hemisphere) from June to October

Best Time To Go On Safari in East Africa

Best Time To Go on Safari in East Africa-Month by Month Beginner’s Guide

The best time to go on safari in East Africa is from January to February and June through to October because this is the dry season and as a result the grass is short making it easy for game spotting . However the question of when is the best time to go on safari in East Africa depends entirely on the desired experience and the countries you want to visit between Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania.

For Example the best time to go Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda is during the dry Months of January to February and June to September, wildlife viewing is best from February -March and September to early October, the best time of the year to go on safari in Tanzania for wildebeest migration is June to October, Bird watching is ideal from November to April, Beach Holidays from June to March and Mountain climbing is best done from July to October.

Travelers should note that deciding when is the best time to go on safari in East Africa depends on what one wants to see (Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Big Five, Great Migration etc..) and which countries you want to visit.  It’s also important to understand how the weather and seasons work in different countries because they vary from region to region. The Continent is a vast one covering the north and south hemispheres which are divided by the Equator. Though the northern hemisphere is divided into four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter, the most part of Africa typically has two seasons including wet and dry.

Best Time To Go On Safari in East Africa

To help you plan the best time to go for your memorable safari adventure in East Africa, here is our month-by-month guide on when to go on safari in East Africa and the countries to visit in different seasons.  In East Africa that is made up of  the countries of Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania, the dry season takes place during the months of January to March and June to October while the Wet Season is around the Months of April to June and November to December.

Best Time To Go On Safari in East Africa Based on One’s Desired Safari Activities

Note that the safari seasons in East Africa are a bit complex and therefore deciding when to go on safari in East Africa depends on what type of safari experience you want to plan. Is it Gorilla trekking, great migration, game viewing or Mountain climbing? The fact is most safari areas in East Africa enjoy warm days, cool evenings and excellent game viewing year-round.

Game viewing and Wildebeest great migration

Game viewing in Uganda’s savannah parks (Murchison falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo and Lake Mburo Parks) is best at the end of the dry season from February to March and September to early October. This is the time when wildlife is concentrated around water sources

The best time to go to Tanzania for a Wildebeest Migration safari in the Serengeti and for wildlife viewing in other major national parks like Ngorongoro crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire is from about June to October

Kenya can be visited for the Masai Mara wildebeest migration from mid-August to late October when the herds have returned from Tanzania’s Serengeti.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda is an all year-round activity but the drier and cooler months of January-February and June –September are recommended.

Mountain Climbing or Hiking

For Mountain climbers and hikes, the dry season of between July and October is very favorable to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt.Meru.

Bird Watching

Bird watching is fantastic all year round but is at its peak from November to April when migrant species are present. We’d recommend trying a Uganda safari during the heavy rains of April and May as there are few people and cars plus lots of discounts on accommodation.

In January large numbers of migratory birds are arriving especially in Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara and these are the  best time for birders to visit Tanzania as it increases chances of seeing variety of bird species. Tanzania Birding is also possible in November and May.

Beach Holidays

If it’s a tropical beach holiday that you’re after, the best time to visit Tanzania’s coast, Zanzibar and other islands is between June and March.

Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast is hot and humid all year round and rain can fall at any time. We recommend avoiding the coast from about March to May when temperatures and rainfall are at their highest.

The islands of the Seychelles can be visited all year round since they have warm beach weather. Note that the islands are hotter from December to April and wet from January and February with showers which are generally short followed by more sunshine.

The best time to visit the gorgeous Mauritius is from April to December when the weather is dry and sunny.
