Guide To Gorilla Trekking For Seniors, Elderly And Disabled Persons
Our guide to Gorilla trekking for the elderly, seniors and disabled persons in Uganda and Rwanda is for travelers above the age of 60 Years, the elderly persons and people with disabilities interested in Gorilla trekking in Bwindi, Volcanoes National Park Rwanda or Mgahinga.
Mountain gorillas are arguably the most intriguing primates on earth that everyone wants to see in a life time though to see them one has to travel to Africa specifically in Bwindi Impenetrable forest and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The cost of Gorilla tours ranges from 1200$ to 3000$ depending on the country one visits.
Gorilla trekking for the elderly can be very exhausting and demanding depending on which gorilla family one is assigned hence a need for better preparation and one to be in a better physical shape. Some gorilla families can be located and spotted in only 30 minutes while for others it can take up to 1 hour.
Trekking Mountain gorillas for seniors may involve passing through challenging terrain, steep slopes and slippery (mud-filled) trails which is a problem for old people and people with disabilities though it cannot limit the seniors and the disabled from encountering the rare gorillas since according to experience most travelers who trek gorillas are 40 years and above. Therefore if you wondering whether to bring you mum or granny for gorilla trekking, then you need to know that it is very possible as long as they can take a flight to Africa.
Who do we consider senior safari travelers?
At Engabi Tours and Travel, we consider travelers above 60 years old to be seniors travelers and as a result we arrange special gorilla tours them. The packages specialty ranges from the guide assigned, the type vehicles used and the routing and flow of the itinerary which is normally relaxed to give more time to rest.
How to book a gorilla safari for the seniors?
To make it easier to get the nearest gorilla family for the seniors, we recommend that the elderly or the disabled book their trips at least 3 Months in advance and they should inform their tour operator about any fitness concerns or physical limitations before booking a trip to see the gorillas. This will help the operator plan according and arrange any special equipment with the park authorities or arrange a special tour van as well as porters and sedan chairs if applicable.
Gorilla trekking tips for the senior travelers
Senior travelers and people with disabilities should disclose their right age and physical shape to the Park rangers and wardens who will make it possible to see gorillas in the wild by assigning them a nearby gorilla family. However if a senior feels they are in excellent shape and want to have more fun and adventure, they can request a longer trek as there is a lot to explore while tracking mountain gorillas.
Senior travelers and people with disabilities should make use of a stretcher made out of local bamboo or sedan chairs. A group of 12 strong local porters (4 at a time) are assigned to carry the elderly with four men carrying the stretcher or sedan chair and others take over once the first four need to rest. They will carry the elder and never let him/her touch the ground until they locate the mountain gorillas. After spotting the gorillas, the porters will once again lift the elder and return them to the starting point where the company driver would be waiting.
Note that carriers and Sedan chairs cost from 400 $ to 500$ inclusive of the porters and depending on the weight of the client. Hiring a porter to just carry the heavy backpacks and cameras costs from 15 $ to 20 $ and alternatively Elderly travelers may use a walking stick for support and easy hiking through the jungle.
Finally senior travelers should to do a bit of physical exercises to ensure fitness and they should carry enough drinking water and energy gel to keep them strong.
Gorilla trekking for seniors accommodation options
The gorilla trekking parks have quality accommodation facilities within and around the gorilla parks which are fit for the elderly and the disabled. They range from Super-luxury lodges, luxury lodges, mid-range options and budget options all in a form of self-contained cottages with grass thatched roofs, self-contained camps, tented camps, basic camp sites and dormitories most of them built to allow people with disabilities to move about easily.
Which Gorilla trekking Park is ideal for the elderly and people with disabilities?
Bwindi National park is the most ideal for the elderly because it is situated in less mountainous areas, sits on lower altitude and the trails are relatively flat compared to Mgahinga and the Volcanoes National Park. In Bwindi National Park, many gorilla families live on lower ground hence offering an easier hike.
Ruhijja sector is excellent for the elderly because it has been observed that tourists who trek there come back much earlier than those who go to other sectors of the park but before booking a gorilla tour or showing up at the starting point, it is important to read about the different gorilla families available in the different national parks and sectors to find out which one is ideal and closer to the starting point of the trek.
Engabi Tours and Travel experts will advise you based on their experience and knowledge about the families since the group structures keep changing year after year and what was easier to track a year ago may have migrated to a different location which is further away from the park offices.
Other things to consider during gorilla tour for the elderly
Apart from the ease of trekking the gorillas, senior travelers should consider the distance and time spent driving to the different gorilla trekking parks to avoid spending long hours on the road hence the stress and the security of the parks which is tighter not forgetting the right Gorilla trekking packing list.

However primates’ lovers should note that gorilla trekking in Bwindi National Park can be done throughout the calendar year though trekking gorillas in the wet seasons of March-May and October to November can be challenging due to the muddy trails and overgrown vegetation.
Note that the rainy /low season attracts discounts for accommodation and the park attracts less crowds giving visitors a more intimate time with the gorillas.
Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Process
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi starts with a briefing at the sector park headquarters at around 7am and here trekkers are separated into smaller groups of 8 with each group following a different gorilla family. The park guides from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, two armed rangers and porters move with each group while sharing information about each of the gorilla group members and Bwindi forest in general.
It takes from 30 minutes to 1 hour to locate the gorilla family with a help of trackers who normally go ahead of the group to identify the location of the family and inform the lead guide by radio call of the location. Trackers know where the gorilla group last built their sleeping nests and will head to that direction. Once the gorilla family is located or spotted, trackers will be allowed a maximum of 1 hour with them to avoid making them uncomfortable. The event is an emotional one as trackers watch gorillas behave like humans and take as many photos as they can. There is no guarantee of seeing the gorillas but the chances of spotting the gorillas is very high and there have been a few and rare cases where the gorilla family heads too far into the forest that the trekking is cancelled to allow visitors return to their lodges before it gets dark.
Always follow the rules and regulations for gorilla trekking such as not smoking or eating within sight of the gorillas and do not run away when a gorilla charges at you; Just lie down with your heads down as a sign of submission.

Top Rwanda Safari Activities and attractions include Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park, Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park , Birding, Big Five Animals viewing safari in Akagera National Park, Kigali City Tour to the Genocide memorial sites, Mountain Biking and Kayaking on lake Kivu among others.
Tanzania
Tanzania is one of the best world’s wildlife safari destination with enormous wilderness in its national parks that can easily be located in their respective circuits. The parks are identified based on three circuits that is the Northern circuit, southern circuit and the western circuit. In total Tanzania boasts of 17 national parks that occupy about a third of the total area within her geographical territories.
The most known and famous safari destination in Tanzania is Serengeti national park due to the annual Wildebeest great migration. A combined Tanzania safari to Serengeti national park and Ngorongoro conservation area specifically the Ngorongoro crater makes the perfect adventurous wildlife tour for a tourist as it comes with high chances of spotting the big five in their natural habitat. Lake Manyara is also attractive with a number of animals which such as elephants, flamingos, buffaloes, zebras and lions among others and finally Tarangire national park is a wonder not forget. Tarangire is famous for its diverse landscape with nine different vegetation zones and is particularly known for the abundance of Ancient Baobab trees (the largest trees in the continent) which fill the landscape and dwarf the animals next to them. The river of the park is full of wildlife ranging from a large variety of birds to lions, leopards, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes and, of course, elephants. Though it’s off the main safari route, Tarangire is a surprise package which is often overshadowed by the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.
Tourists can go on a Tanzania safari/Visit Tanzania any time of the year as the destination is always attractive though the best time to go on a Tanzania safari or the best time to visit Tanzania depends on one’s interest. Between January and March which is the time for calving, Serengeti national park attracts predators such as lions, leopards among others in search of food hence this season becoming one of the best times to spot predators in the Serengeti national park.
Between June and July is the best time to witness the great wildebeest migration in large numbers in the Serengeti. However wildebeest migration can also be witnessed but not in large numbers in August till early November.
In January large numbers of migratory birds are arriving especially in Ngorongoro and Lake manyara and is the best time for birders to visit Tanzania as it increases chances of seeing variety of bird species. Tanzania Birding is also possible in November and May.
For Mountain climbers and hikes, the dry season of between and October is very favorable to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt.Meru.
All the above Tanzania safari activities can be done in the various national game parks in mostly Northern circuit parks of Serengeti, Lake manyara, Tarangire and Ngorongoro.

Choose where to go on Safari in Africa
When planning an African Safari Tour as a Couple, the first question you should ask yourself is where should I go on safari?
To answer this question, we recommend that you Start with having a specific goal for your safari by coming up with what exactly you want to see or do on your African Safari Vacation. Maybe you’ve dreamt of seeing gorillas since you were a child, or witnessing great migration in Serengeti or Masai Mara or seeing all the Big 5 in the wild. When you know precisely the goal of your African Safari, it will be easy for you to determine your ideal African Safari destination and then contact your travel planner to design your travel plan. Ask us at Engabi Tour and Travel to guide on where is the best place to see the animals or attractions you most want to see?
Know When You Want to Go
At Engabi Tours and Travel, we recommend that you come up with precise dates of the year you intend to go on your African Safari tour and the number of days you want to stay on safari in Africa as you start planning your African Safari Itinerary. This is because knowing when to go largely influences your trip budget as accommodation prices differ in different Months especially in Tanzania, what you will see and experience on your trip and it also determines how soon in advance you can book your trip especially for seasonal events like the great migration.
Travelers should note that timing is everything for an African Safari as most of the continent’s bucket list safari experiences depend entirely on naturally occurring factors like seasonal rainfall. This means that having preferred travel dates will make a big difference to your itinerary. For example, you don’t want to be in the Serengeti when the millions of wildebeest are already mowing down fresh grass in the Masai Mara!
Have a Budget Estimate
After knowing when you want to go and your ideal destination, its now time for you to come up with a budget estimate or to determine how much money you want to spend on your tour. Your vacation budget will depend on the number of people you are traveling with, your preferred travel style in terms of accommodation(Budget, mid-luxury or luxury), Transport means(Private, Shared or public means) and the activities or attractions you want to see. for example a gorilla viewing permit in Uganda costs $800 Per person. We booked a one week trip with through Rwanda and Uganda for chimpanzees and gorilla tracking
Our guide was Daniel. He knew a lot about all the animals, the countries and their culture. Plus he has a lot of very good stories. We had a lot of fun with him. He was the Best guide we ever had.
Chimpanzee and gorilla tracking was a once in a live time experience. We can totally recommend it.
The tour itself was of high quality for a reasonable price. Chris (the Boss of engabi) selected a good route so we never had a long drive. Lake Buryoni was a hidden gem. But also the cultural project was good to see. All accommodation were nice with good food. Especially the one at the lake.
The booking was very uncomplicated, Chris was very flexible for changes.
The only little negativ thing were a little confusions with times and dates. So I would recommend to write down all dates and times in the initial travel plan so that both sides can double check, if everything is correct.
